Different languages, over different times have enjoyed varying different levels of importance throughout the world. Greek and Latin were for their period the lingua franca (working language), while today English has emerged worldwide as the working language of this period. French is spoken in 55 nations by 22 million people.
Partly due to historical reason thanks to the spread of the British Empire during the 15th and 16th centuries and today’s influence of the North American culture.
Spanish is the Third Most Commonly Spoken Language
However, Spanish has become a very significant language that started to spread in the 13th century and on through until the 17th century. Today one of the most widely spoken languages across the globe is Spanish. Millions of people speak Spanish as their first language, while many others have taken it as a second language.
In Europe, Spanish is one of the official languages of the European Union, while it is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Spanish is predominantly spoken throughout the vast majority of Latin America.
In the U.S., more than 52 million people speak Spanish. That group is comprised by more than 45 million Hispanics along with another 6 million who are studying the language.
That makes the United States host to the largest community of Spanish speaking people in the world with the exception of Mexico. More Spanish is spoken in the U.S. than Chinese, Italian and French combined. Close to one in seven living in the U.S. can speak Spanish.
Experts predict that by the beginning of 2050 close to 100 million people residing in the U.S. or close to one out of every 3 will speak the language.
On a worldwide level, over 420 million people speak Spanish and some estimates have that as high as 500 million. Spanish is commonly heard in over 20 countries and is second only to Mandarin Chinese, as the most widely spoke native language.
Learning a second or even third language opens doors to employment, new cultures and new customs. While traveling, it is nice to know you can speak the native language of Spain, Argentina or Mexico.
If one wants to, live, work or retire in a Spanish speaking country knowing the language is essential.
One does not realize how much they take for granted speaking their own language until they are confronted with a language they do not understand. With Spanish being one of the most widely spoken languages across the globe, it is an excellent choice as a second language.
