WASHINGTON DOCTOR DEVELOPS INNOVATIVE METHOD FOR SKIN CANCER TREATMENT

PRESS RELEASE: GIG HARBOR, Washington (12/5/2013) – According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer will have been diagnosed in 2013, with approximately half of all Americans who live to age 65 contracting either basal or squamous cell skin cancer in their lifetime. Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, will account for more than 76,000 diagnoses and nearly 10,000 deaths from the disease this year. But while the numbers continue to grow, so do the types and quality of treatments.

Dr. Justin Piasecki, a board certified plastic surgeon in Gig Harbor, Washington, is the only physician in the world who is both fellowship trained in Mohs micrographic surgery and board certified in facial plastics. Dr. Piasecki has leveraged this training and experience to pioneer a treatment known as plastic micrographic surgery.

“The ability to perform both Mohs micrographic surgery and plastic surgery in the same visit benefits patients in several ways,” said Dr. Piasecki. “It not only reduces the amount of time that patients spend in surgery and saves them an additional office visit, but it also cuts down on the costs associated with having multiple procedures performed.”

Recognized as the most advanced and effective method to treat skin cancer today, Mohs micrographic surgery is an extremely precise and less invasive procedure that removes cancerous tissue one layer at a time. Dr. Piasecki takes the Mohs procedure a step further by performing cosmetic or reconstructive surgery immediately following the Mohs technique.

The unique benefits of Dr. Piasecki’s two-pronged plastic micrographic surgery approach include:

–  In addition to removing the skin cancer, with plastic micrographic surgery the remaining wound can be cosmetically repaired during the same visit, eliminating the need for a second surgery;

– Eliminating the need for a second surgery or referral to a plastic surgeon saves patients both time and money;

–  Dr. Piasecki performs the reconstructive surgery in an ambulatory surgery center as opposed to an operating room, which is a more cost-effective option for patients.

Dr. Piasecki has been performing plastic micrographic surgery at Harbor Plastic Surgery Center for the past five years.  Earning his certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and the American Board of Facial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Piasecki is the only board certified plastic surgeon in Gig Harbor, Washington. A graduate of Stanford University and Vanderbilt Medical School, Dr. Piasecki received his formal training in Mohs micrographic surgery from the University of British Columbia.
