LIGHTNING RELEASES 03/26/14 –A hip young professor returns to his hometown with high expectations for the good life among home folks, but trying to fit in leads to disappointment, disillusion, and trauma.
A professor who’s “too cool for school” finds life in his hometown isn’t as welcoming as he’d hoped in the newly released fiction, A Place to Call Home. The novel is published by Outskirts Press.
After graduate school, Oliver Hardin comes home to Satilla County to live and teach. He enjoys success on campus as a cool professor and good times in a local bar with rowdy friends. Then he begins to encounter resistance from south Georgia culture.
“I let imagination play with memory and reality in order to bring to light the joys and sorrows inherent in living, not just in south Georgia or the South in general but also in the larger world out there,” author Oscar Patton says of A Place to Call Home and his other novels. “I turn fact into fiction and then disguise it as truth.”
The misadventures of his protagonist, Oliver, culminate in Oliver getting cut down at a cock fight and losing his best friend, another misfit, to suicide. He is forced to reassess his life and redefine what it means to be “home.”
