SOMOSTV’s channel runs Dr. Seuss Marathon on March 3rd
LIGHTNING RELEASES: MIAMI, Florida (2/19/2014) – Semillitas, the 24 hour animation channel for children between 0 and 5 years of age, owned by SOMOSTV, is collaborating with Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP), Dicapta and the National Education Association (NEA) on the 7th annual Read Captions Across America Campaign. Semillitas will be supporting and promoting the campaign to include Hispanic children who are deaf or hard of hearing with the opportunity to join in the celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The celebration will be held March 3rd and is part of the National Education Association’s Read Across America campaign- the largest reading event in the United States, celebrated with read-aloud, read-along and reading marathon activities. The DCMP supports the efforts of the NEA’s Read Across American providing various activities from “providing free-loan educational captioned media to registered users” to “supporting efforts by parents and educators to increase the availability of educational captioned media.” (http://readcaptionsacrossamerica.org/)

SOMOSTV’s children’s channel, Semillitas, will be running a Dr. Seuss marathon that will run from 12pm to 6pm in neutral Spanish on March 3rd that will have captioning available for every child who tunes into Semillitas during that time. Read Captions across America puts emphasis on the importance of captioned media as a tool for the deaf and hearing impaired children alike, especially in the Latin communities. Captioned media is rapidly fostering the literacy development.
Semillitas’ mission is to help Hispanic parents in the preservation of language and cultural heritage in a soothing, safe, violence-free, entertaining and educational television space for toddlers and preschoolers. The channel prides itself on its dynamic programming strategy, with morning focused on toddlers and the afternoons for preschoolers, with culturally relevant environment and original interactive pieces produced in-house.

About the “Semillitas – Dicapta Partnership”: Through a grant by the U.S. Department of Education (under grant number H327C100008), Dicapta has been working on providing captioning and video description to Semillitas’ educational programming allowing children with hearing and/or visual limitations to have full access to their unique content.
