Janis Ian has already proudly donated $750,000 in scholarships through her Pearl Foundation

Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter and author Janis Ian will host an online auction to benefit the Peal Foundation (www.pearlfoundation.com)  from November 21 through December 1, 2013.  “Prose for Pearl” will include over 20 extraordinary and unique items from notable authors, all with no reserve.

What makes the auction so special is that all the donors are personal friends of Ian’s; many of them contributed to her book Stars: Stories Based On the Songs of Janis Ian, with the audio book coming out on Audible.com in January, 2014. Even more unusual, all items either are or can be signed, and most of the authors have agreed to personalize the items upon request.

Prized items so far include an original script from the pilot episode of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones, signed by all the Starks and Martin, the late Anne McCaffrey’s personal letter opener and a set of galleys with annotations by Anne, a “Harlan Ellison Rat” from Harlan himself, a mandolin donated by author Mercedes Lackey, and a personalized fable or poem by Jane Yolen, as well as the original annotated production manuscript for the bestselling Star Wars novel Young Jedi Knights: Darkest Knight.

The auction will take place on the Pearl Foundation’s official eBay page. You can find the listings as of November 1 by going to http://stores.ebay.com/thepearlfoundation .

Ian founded the Pearl Foundation in 1998 to honor her mother who went back to college in her late forties and achieved her lifelong dream to receive a degree.  At that time, Ian and Michael Camp launched the first-ever Internet auction http://www.janisian.com/auction/ , raising over $63,000 in scholarship money for her mother’s alma mater, Goddard College.

To date, the foundation has proudly distributed over $750,000 to fund scholarships for those seeking to further their education later in life. The foundation has helped students including grade school drop outs who have taken a GED in order to go to college, as well as  people in their fifties who have returned to school to earn their masters degrees. The Pearl Foundation and Janis’ family currently furnish endowments at Goddard College, UT Knoxville, Berea College, and Warren Wilson College
