Online Continuing Education Courses for Acupuncturists

Many people choose to visit acupuncturists when Western medicine has not delivered all it has promised. Acupuncture is defined as “The procedure of inserting and manipulating needles into various points on the body to relieve pain or for therapeutic purposes.” An acupuncturist is an alternative healthcare professional who is trained and qualified to practice acupuncture.  Acupuncturists can treat many different conditions, from migraine headaches to sexual disorders.

In the United States acupuncture is practiced by an array of healthcare practitioners. Individuals who specialize in acupuncture and oriental medicine are generally referred to as licensed acupuncturists (or L.Ac.’s). There may be other healthcare providers that choose to include acupuncture in their practices but have less formal training in the discipline than do L.Ac.’s. Examples of these providers include doctors, chiropractors and dentists.

The requirements set down by the law for the practice of acupuncture are not the same in every state. In most states acupuncturists must earn a Master of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine or the equivalent from a school that has been accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM).The amount of training hours vary as well. In most states 2500 to 4000 hours of training in acupuncture, basic bioscience and Chinese medical theory is required. Be aware as well that many of the states throughout the U.S. require proper documentation from what is known as the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

Continuing education courses are necessary for an acupuncturist to maintain his or her license to practice.
