Macular Degeneration (AMD) Remains Troubling Cause of Senior Vision Loss in Indiana

LIGHTNING RELEASES (02/03/2014) – Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) continues to be the leading cause of vision loss for people over age 65,” noted Northwest Indiana Eye & Laser Center Ophthalmologist Scott Buck, M.D. “In fact, according to a study recently published Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology even with our best efforts at patient education and awareness along with early intervention and treatment with advanced drug injections, AMD still causes severe vision impairment in approximately 15 percent of Americans 85 and older,” continued Dr. Scott Buck.

“What patients sometimes overlook is the real effect of vision loss and visual impairment in seniors. Sure, people know that blindness and vision problems increase rapidly with age-particularly after age 65-but a lesser known fact is that vision loss is associated with a higher prevalence of chronic health conditions, falls, injuries, depression and social isolation. This is just not good for seniors,” stressed Dr. Buck. “While we have made a great deal of progress-we need to do even better.”

Prevent Blindness America has designated February as National Age Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month. It is important for all patients older than 50 to have a comprehensive, dilated eye examination every one to two years so that we can detect any signs of AMD as early as possible. However, if anyone in your family has macular degeneration we want to see you more often. With early detection and diagnosis we can help preserve vision. Patients can also help to decrease their risk of developing age related macular degeneration (AMD) by not smoking, moderating alcohol consumption to less than 15g per day, eating a heart-healthy diet rich in fish, fruit and green leafy vegetables, avoiding foods with trans fats, exercising and controlling blood pressure and weight.

Northwest Indiana Eye & Laser Center is conveniently located for patients seeking eye care from throughout northern Indiana as well as the south suburban Chicago, Illinois areas.
