Dr. Lael Telfeyan is a psychotherapist specializing in adults, adolescents and children in individual, family and couples therapy. Having received her doctorate in clinical social work from NYU, Dr. Telfeyan possesses considerable expertise in the areas of sexual abuse, child neglect, substance abuse and domestic violence. And with over 30 years in the field, she has much experience in the areas of adolescent development, family dysfunction, attachment issues, substance use and other traumatic circumstances. You name it, Dr. Telfeyan has seen it and she’s not afraid of it.
“My profession is very much about people’s resilience and their ability to tap into their internal and external resources,” says Dr. Telfeyan. “So my approach is very strength-based. Everyone leaves their first session with one or two short or long term goals because it’s important for people to know what they want to accomplish and achieve, even if they are suffering from depression. It’s about helping people get back on the horse and start riding again.”
Those goals can be as simple as feeling a little bit better every day, reducing uncomfortable symptoms, working on self-esteem or improving their relationships with family. Dr. Telfeyan will often employ Narrative Therapy, which separates the person from the problem. Through narrative therapy, clients can experience a sense of hope, meaning and accomplishment.
“I think it’s really important that you find the right therapist for you, someone to help you approach your therapy in a positive, cognitive way,” says Dr. Telfeyan. “By developing more effective coping skills and problem solving skills, you can make your life different, effective and a little bit better.”
